Team Vows to Win 4th Consecutive Class Championship and Finish with High Overall Ranking - Press Conference and Team Supporters' Rally Held to Mark Hino's Entry in the Dakar Rally 2013 -

Oct 24, 2012

On October 16, Hino Motors (Hino) held a press conference at the company’s headquarters in Hino City, announcing their intention to team up with Team Sugawara, led by Yoshimasa Sugawara, as HINO TEAM SUGAWARA to enter two HINO 500 Series trucks in the Trucks category of the Dakar Rally 2013 which is scheduled for January 5-20, traversing Peru, Argentina, and Chile in South America.

Present at the announcement, alongside members of the HINO TEAM SUGAWARA, were Hino chairman Kazuo Okamoto, and president Yoshio Shirai.

At the beginning of the event, Mr. Shirai explained the significance for Hino to be taking part in the Dakar Rally, and cheered the team on. This was followed by an overview given by Teruhito Sugawara - driver of Car 2 and winner of 3 consecutive championships in the Under 10-litre class - of the development of the new racing truck, which began in 2012 as a 3-year project and the features of the trucks for Dakar 2013, as well as details of the course characteristics for the 2013 race and how the team plans to tackle it. Next up was the driver of Car 1 and holder of the Guinness Record for the most consecutive entries in the Dakar Rally at 30, Yoshimasa Sugawara, who discussed his ambitions for this, his 31st entry in the Dakar Rally. In closing, Mr. Okamoto expressed his gratitude to all present for their support in enabling Hino to enter and finish a record 21 consecutive Dakar Rally races, and extended words of encouragement to the team. The Hino chairman also expressed his intention to visit Chile for the upcoming race to support the team and meet them at the goal. Mitsuhiro Urabe from Kagawa Hino Motors expressed his strong commitment, speaking on behalf of the four mechanics who were chosen from Hino dealers nationwide as team members. As the race trucks for the 2013 race were unveiled to the 30 or so press representatives, camera flashes lit up and team members fielded questions from reporters on the trucks’ specifications and the team’s race ambitions, indicating the considerable interest in Hino’s participation in this race.

After the press conference, a team supporters’ rally was held during lunch hours inside the Hino headquarters building. This event was attended by about 200 individuals, including representatives from sponsors as well as Hino Motors’ directors and employees. The party featured a speech by Mr. Shirai, statements of commitment from Yoshimasa and Teruhito Sugawara, an overview of the trucks and racecourse, and a speech of encouragement from Mr. Okamoto. In closing, the crowd joined in a rally cry of "Let’s give it our all as HINO TEAM SUGAWARA!" and "Ei ei oh!" which was led by Mr. Enomoto, section chief at the Technical Research Center and the new CE for truck fabrication from this fiscal year.

The following are the contents of speeches given by those who were present at the press conference and team supporters’ rally.

"The team will race through the South American continent with the HINO spirit."
Yoshio Shirai, President, Hino Motors

Ever since Hino first entered the Dakar Rally in 1991 as a Japanese truck maker, we have continued to take on the challenges posed by this race, known as the most grueling in the world. The upcoming race in 2013 will mark the company’s 22nd entry in the event. For Hino, the Dakar Rally is not only a venue where we can confirm and globally showcase our technological prowess and excellent servicing capabilities, but also a symbol of the "HINO spirit" of constantly setting high goals, retaining a burning passion to make excellent products, and remaining always ready to take on new challenges. Thanks to all of you, Hino celebrated its 70th anniversary this year.

The fact that we were able to establish a "Record 21 finishes in the Dakar Rally" on this auspicious year is a fitting tribute to our ability to collaborate as a coherent team, as well as reflecting the generous support of our sponsors, affiliates, and supporters. I traveled to Peru in January this year to lend my support to the team in the Dakar Rally for the first time, and was struck by how the entire country, from the President down, supported the Dakar Rally. Witnessing this, I also re-affirmed the importance of Hino’s challenge, namely to constantly target the top spot of one of the world’s major rallies. While various elements have been detrimental to our business climate in recent years, including the unprecedented global economic turndown and the Great East Japan Earthquake, it is my belief that being confronted with these challenges makes it all the more crucial to keep the "HINO spirit" burning, and demonstrate this spirit of taking on challenge to the world. My hope for the 2013 race is that the team will win their 4th consecutive championship in the Under 10-litre class and finish with a high ranking in the overall Trucks category, confirming Hino’s outstanding technological prowess and servicing capabilities. I would like to request your continued support as Hino races through the "great land of South America" in the upcoming Dakar Rally.

"This is part of a 3-year project to develop a new truck with greatly improved performance."
Teruhito Sugawara, Driver, Car 2

In 2012, we launched a 3-year development project for a new racing truck that will eventually be able to target a spot in the top 5 in the Trucks category, and entered a new truck - for the first time in 8 years - in the modified category. In 2012, the first year of the project, we relocated the engine to a mid-ship position as well as the intercooler, to enhance the cooling performance. We also reduced the truck’s weight by 300kg via modifications, such as the use of canvas on the sides of the rear body. Thanks to these efforts, we could improve many aspects of the truck’s racing performance, including a 10% improvement in time, which allowed us to win our 3rd straight class championship, and come in at 9th place in the overall Trucks category, representing solid progress in terms of narrowing the difference with the top contenders in the overall category.

In 2013, which will be our second year, Car 1 will be designated as a "new specification test truck." Based on the truck we entered in 2012, it will be the first Hino truck for Dakar to be powered by an electronically controlled (common rail) engine. While the maximum output and torque of the engine remain unchanged from the current model, the use of electronically controlled fuel injection will enable us to expand the range at which the engine can deliver peak torque. In August, we conducted a field test at the Rally Mongolia, where we encountered no problems and gained an excellent feel for the performance. However, we must be always ready for the unexpected as this will be the first time that we take on Dakar with an electronically controlled engine and there are a fair number of unknowns. We will position the next race as a basis for targeting higher positions and also optimally exploit it as a testing ground. In addition to these modifications, Car 1 now features disk brakes and axles with hub reduction to further boost the truck performance. Additionally, the rear body was reshaped from a box shape to a tapered one to enhance its strength, and movable flexible joints are now used rather than welded joints to improve its durability against torsion stresses. Car 2, excepting modifications to the rear body, will largely retain the specifications employed in the 2012 race - specifications that will be further “matured” to deliver the same outstanding performance as seen to date.

The 2013 race will start from Lima, Peru, traverse the Andes Mountains into Argentina, and after a rest day, cross back over the Andes entering Chile, and head for Santiago on a course spanning a total of about 8,000km. Soon after the start, we will enter the Atacama Desert in Peru, one of the more challenging stretches. We will then traverse the Andes Mountains into Argentina, driving through areas at elevations of up to 4,900m according to organizers, which will be the highest in the history of the Dakar Rally. Once in Chile, we will be racing over huge dunes in Copiapo just before the goal, and we believe this will be the key segment for the latter half of the race. As Hino trucks handle dunes well, we plan to complete the Atacama Desert segment at the first half of the race carefully, and go all out on the large dunes in Copiapo towards the end of the race. I would like to thank you in advance for your support.

"I will continue to race with the feeling of starting school again."
Yoshimasa Sugawara, Team Director and Driver of Car 1

I have been racing in the Dakar Rally since I was 41 years old, and this upcoming race will be the 31st consecutive entry for me. The other day, I had the opportunity to get together with about 30 people from Hino dealers who took part in past Dakar Rallies as mechanics, some of whom have advanced to become directors at their dealers. Moreover, I was delighted to learn that they were using their experience in Dakar to help their work as executives. I’m often asked what my motivation is for continuing to enter the race as a racer. Once you race in the Dakar, you notice how very challenging it is and how difficult it is to graduate, so to speak. Over the years, I have developed the habit of taking notes towards the end of the race to prepare for the next. It’s akin to the feeling a student may have, when eager to begin the new school year with a renewed sense of conviction.

Taking part in the Dakar is a great opportunity for young people to open their eyes to the world. In contrast to Africa, Peru and Chile are home to fine Hino dealers and you encounter HINO 500 Series trucks on the road. The drivers of these trucks wave at us as we pass them on the road during connections. The people working at local dealers are also delighted to see Hino trucks doing well in the race. I would like to continue to race, boldly displaying the “HINO” mark, and with gratitude for everyone’s support in my heart. I would like to thank you in advance for your support.

"Let’s show our gratitude and tightly knit teamwork to the world."
Kazuo Okamoto, Chairman of the Board, Hino Motors1

Hino celebrated its 70th anniversary this year. This was a great opportunity to renew our sense of gratitude to those who have supported us, and a time to reflect on the importance of the ties between all of us here at Hino. I wish to say “Thank you” to the people of the world as it is with their support that we have been able to continue entering and finishing in the Dakar Rally for as long as we have. Motor sport teams face extreme challenges in that circumstances can change instantly and no-one knows what will happen until one crosses the finish line. This is no doubt also challenging for mechanics. I am confident the team will maintain its focus to the end and deliver the kind of teamwork that comes from the close ties forged between the team members. I will also be traveling to Chile to cheer on the team, and will meet them at the goal. I would like to thank all of you in Japan in advance for your support.

"Communicate the challenges of finishing the race to younger generations, and collaborate to give it our best."
Mitsuhiro Urabe, Mechanic Leader from Kagawa Hino Motors

I joined the team for the first time in 2009 as a mechanic, and this will be the second time I join the team. In 2009, my attitude was somewhat naive in that I thought finishing the race was a given. However, upon actually experiencing the race, I realized how difficult it was to finish. Of the 4 mechanics that were chosen from Hino dealers nationwide, the 3 other than myself will be experiencing it for the first time. Therefore, I would like to communicate the challenges involved in finishing the race, and take a step back in our actual work to create an environment that will allow us to perform servicing tasks with greater efficiency. We are fully committed. While finishing the race is our primary goal, we will also aim to finish with a high ranking.
