HINO TEAM SUGAWARA to Enter the Rally Mongolia 2012

Share

HINO TEAM SUGAWARA will be entering their new "HINO 500 Series" racing truck in the "Rally Mongolia 2012," which is scheduled to kick off on August 12, 2012.

Rally Mongolia 2012 will start/finish at Ulan Bator, Mongolia and continue over approx. 3,000 km over 8 days. Because the race will feature dune stages in the Gobi Desert, and contestants will be faced with daytime temperatures approaching 40ºC just as they would in the Dakar Rally, HINO TEAM SUGAWARA positions this race as a real-world test run for the Dakar Rally. This year, the team will focus on testing their electronically-controlled fuel injection (common rail) engine, and disk brake system, both of which are team firsts.

The truck will be piloted by Teruhito Sugawara, who is the reigning champion with 3 consecutive wins in the Under 10-litre Trucks class as of the latest Dakar Rally. Additionally, as part of the team's efforts to train younger staff and get them up to speed on the rally environment, the team will be dispatching freshmen staff members as official staff.
A test run of the new racing truck was conducted on the Hino Motors Hamura Test Course (Hamura, Tokyo) on July 14, and the truck is scheduled to depart for Mongolia on July 19.

<Comments after the test run of July 14>

Yoshimasa Sugawara:

The truck has turned out really well considering we are only into the second year of our 3-year program. Our aim is to evolve the truck every year and give it the capability to aim for higher positions in the Dakar Rally. There is still a lot that we can do.

Teruhito Sugawara:
The torque response of this common rail engine feels really good. There is less torque drop off (compared to mechanically injected engines), giving us lots to look forward to in terms of its performance in the Dakar Rally. The brakes feel good too. Our first step will be to iron out all the problems at Rally Mongolia.
