Hino Motors wins the victory in both Series Production Trucks and Challenge under 10 liters cc, achieving its 19th successive race completion in Dakar Rally
Hino Motors, Ltd. ("Hino") won victories both in the Series Production Trucks and Challenge under 10 liters cc, finishing the Dakar 2010 for its 19th successive race. The Dakar 2010 was held in South America, between Buenos Aires in Argentina and Antofagasta in Chile from January 1st to the 17th.
The Dakar 2010, like the Dakar 2009, was once again held in South America over extremely difficult courses, including the crossing of the Andes Mountain ranges with an altitude difference of approximately 4,000 meters, huge dunes in the Atacama Desert in Chile, and high-speed stages using the same courses as those used by the WRC (World Rally Championship). It was an extremely grueling race as indicated by a rally completion ratio of only 52% (out of 362 units in total including Motorcycles and Cars).
Hino participated in the rally as "Hino Team Sugawara" using two Hino 500 Series vehicles driven by father-and-son drivers; Yoshimasa Sugawara (age 68), who competed in his 27th consecutive race as the longest driving entrant ever in the history of this rally (his 26th entry was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records) and his son, Teruhito Sugawara (age 37); and Car 2, driven by Teruhito Sugawara and Seiichi Suzuki, won the victory. Car 1, driven by Yoshimasa Sugawara and Katsumi Hamura, that had to make an unavoidable detour due to exhaust troubles, was disqualified from the race as it did not pass through the designated way points. *
Hino's first entry in the world's most grueling rally, the Dakar Rally, dates back to 1991. Hino achieved an overall victory in the Truck Division in 1997. It has been continuously marking high positions beating many "monster" trucks with an engine displacement more than twice that of the Hino 500 Series vehicles. Hino continues to provide products and services that satisfy our customers, with its advanced technology and the spirit to meet challenges fostered throughout our long racing history.

Hino in the Dakar Rally
Hino Motors, Ltd. ("Hino") participated in the Dakar Rally (then known as the Paris-Dakar Rally) for the first time in 1991, as the first entrant from among all the Japanese truck manufacturers. Its truck achieved 2nd position in the overall Truck Division in 1994 and 1995. In 1997, after undergoing reinforcement to aim at an overall victory, Hino became the first to dominate the top three positions in the overall Truck Division, an unprecedented finish in Dakar Rally history.
The team has continuously participated in the rally as one of the top teams in its division; for example, it has come in 2nd position in the overall Truck Division 3 times. Moreover, it achieved 7 victories in the class with an engine displacement of under 10 liters between 1996 and 2002, since this class was established. This class was abolished in 2003, 2004, and 2006. Hino won victories in 2005, 2007, and also in this 2010 rally.
