Apr 27, 2015

Paris, April 2015: Organizers of the Dakar Rally announced the host countries for 2016 in the capital city of France. The 2016 rally will be held in three countries: Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. The race will kick off on January 3, 2016 in the Peruvian capital of Lima, which will be hosting the rally for the first time in three years. Contestants will first head south over great dunes in areas where daytime temperatures can reach nearly 50ºC. They will then traverse the Andes longitudinally to an elevation of 3800m near Lake Titicaca, which straddles the Bolivian border, before crossing into Bolivia. This will be the third time since 2014 that Bolivia figures in the race itinerary and the first time for the Truck category competition to be held in the country. After heated competition in the highlands of Bolivia, teams will have a day of rest on January 10 in Salta, a city in northern Argentina. After the rest day, contestants will compete on high-speed dirt courses that weave through the expansive Pampas and race to the finish line in Rosario, Argentina on January 16.
The 2016 rally is expected to be a grueling ordeal for machines and humans alike as they face the various challenges of nature over deserts, highlands, and high-speed dirt tracks.
Chile, which hosted the Dakar Rally for seven consecutive years after the competition relocated to South America in 2009, has been forced to decline hosting due to repercussions from flooding in the northern part of the country.
