Truck Entering Dakar Rally 2022 Now Complete

Oct 27, 2021

The truck that Hino Motors, Ltd. will be entering as HINO TEAM SUGAWARA in Dakar Rally 2022 is now complete.

Based on the truck with bonnet-type cab that competed in the 2020 race, the new truck has shed more weight, and runs on Hino's first racing hybrid system and high horsepower engine. Through repeated development and testing, the team has achieved outstanding power performance for the truck.

With the spirit of taking on challenges that has been passed down throughout the team's history, and by leveraging the experience and technical expertise it has honed over the years, HINO TEAM SUGAWARA will be fielding a truck equipped with a racing hybrid system to take on the Dakar Rally, often said to be the "world's most grueling rally."

■ Teruhito Sugawara (Team Director and Driver)
We fine tuned the settings for the hybrid, automatic transmission, and suspension systems during our test runs in October. We also improved the truck's acceleration performance dramatically, and its speed is very encouraging.
I'm looking forward to see how well we compete against our heavy-duty rivals.

■ Mitsuru Enomoto (Project Chief Engineer)
We worked on the truck with bonnet-type cab that the team entered in Dakar Rally 2020 from top to bottom to improve its acceleration performance. With an engine that produces 800 ps thanks to its newly developed, high-efficiency turbo, and a battery (capacitor) that can be expected to generate instantaneous motor output, we now have an engine + hybrid combination that delivers a total of over 1,000 ps.
In addition, the truck is packed with new technologies including a racing AT that shifts instantly, and an ultra-lightweight rear body that makes heavy use of high-strength aluminum and GFRP.
