Race Report 2010

Won double victories in both Series Production Trucks and Challenge Under 10 Liters cc.
2010, 31st Dakar Rally Argentina-Chile

The Dakar 2010, whose rally courses extended approximately 8,600 km, was held between Argentina and Chile from January 1st to the 17th, and Hino Team Sugawara participated in Series Production Trucks in the Camion (Truck) Division with two Hino 500 Series vehicles. Car 2 (driven by Teruhito Sugawara and Seiichi Suzuki) came in 7th in the overall Truck Division and won victories in both Series Production Trucks and in Challenge Under 10 Liters cc.

2010

Car 2 competed in top ranking among the vehicles with an engine displacement of below 10 liters from the first half of the race, and also ranked high even within Challenge Under 10 Liters cc. On the first day of the latter half of the rally, Car 2 broke through to top rank in both Series Production Trucks and in Challenge Under 10 Liters cc. Although Car 1 (driven by Yoshimasa Sugawara and Katsumi Hamura) was regrettably sidelined due to exhaust system trouble on the 2nd day of the latter half of the rally, Car 2 further widened its lead in the field, reaching its goal with a huge gap between Car 2 and the second place entrant, and also attaining the high rank of 7th in the overall Truck Division which included many heavy-duty modified trucks. It won double victories – an admirable record in Series Production Trucks and in Challenge Under 10 Liters cc.

A few thousand spectators gathered at the goal ceremony to congratulate the winners – their enthusiastic cheers aroused the crowd in a lively atmosphere befitting the Dakar Rally. Teruhito Sugawara and Seiichi Suzuki, who received winners’ trophies for both Series Production Trucks and Challenge Under 10 Liters cc, responded to the cheers by waving hands with drivers Yoshimasa Sugawara and Katsumi Hamura of Car 1, and the 5 mechanics.

Only 28 of the 52 entrants in the Truck Division completed the rally this time – it was an extremely grueling race overall, with a rally completion ratio of only 53.8%. The victory gained in Series Production Trucks, in which the allowance for vehicle modification is limited, verified the high mobility, drivability, reliability, and durability of the Hino 500 Series, and showcased the comprehensive capability of the Hino Group to the world.
